enso SMART Communities

Our vision is leveraging technology and EQ/SQ to provide affordable world class education, energy, health and wellbeing to a billion people in the developing world through 10,000 SMART Communities.

The Challenges

A child from a low and middle income family in sub Saharan Africa is likely to be:

  • Underachieving academically

    • Be in an overcrowded classroom with up to 100+ other children
    • Be in a classroom where the teacher doesn’t show up – 40%+ of instructional time is lost due to teacher absenteeism
    • Be taught by rote
    • Have a teacher who themselves doesn’t know the subject very well
  • Missing EQ/SQ skills

    • The Integrity to make hard ethical choices
    • The Commitment to set worthy goals and not give up when the going gets hard
    • The Resilience to bounce back when you meet suffering - the loss of loved one, financial difficulties, job loss.
    • The Empathy to have strong, healthy relationships, at home and at work
    • The Courage to face fearful situations and go through them
  • At risk of abuse at home & in the community

    • Domestic physical and sexual abuse is widespread, especially against girls and women. Well over 40% of girls and women report being abused
    • Even those not abused often do not get the support at home needed to excel at school
  • Prone to sickness

    • From breathing in kerosene fumes at home (kerosene kills 3.5million under 5’s every year)
    • From drinking dirty water (up to 50% of illness is caused by pathogens in water)
    • From eating with dirty hands
    • From being undernourished. 1 in 8 people go to bed hungry every day. This can stunt a child's growth, lead to sickness, and affect their academic performance

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. - Nelson Mandela -

Two Game Changers

Two forces have the potential to transform all four of these challenges:

  • 1
  • Technology

  • Technology

The explosion of high quality edtech means that world class education is potentially available to all.
Off grid solar energy means clean and healthy energy is potentially available in every household, protecting children from respiratory illness which otherwise keeps them out of school.

Medtech and other technology means that high quality healthcare -  including preventive healthcare such as safe water, hygiene and sanitation - is potentially available to every child, and indeed also to their parents and the wider community.

  • 2
  • EQ/SQ (emotional/social quotient skills)

  • EQ/SQ (emotional/social quotient skills)

Jon Kabat-Zinn, Daniel Goleman, and others have brought EQ/SQ (emotional and social intelligence) into the mainstream. Mindfulness, empathy, kindness, confidence, resilience, and other qualities of heart and mind, which were until not long ago considered hippy fringe interests, are now widely discussed and practised in education, healthcare, business, government, science, in families and other areas of society.

The results are already impressive, and still we have barely scratched the potential of EQ/SQ, either in schools or in wider society.

The enso Solution

We’re bringing together world class tech and EQ/SQ to transform the lives of low and middle income families across Africa. Our model educates children:

  • Using best-in-class edtech
  • Keeping them healthy with healthcare, nutrition, WASH, & clean energy
  • Training them as high EQ/SQ Leaders, capable of leading positive change in their communities & wider society
  • Raising their family and community EQ/SQ

Our strategy

To do that, we’ve built a consortium of 4 multi award winning companies, all with best-in-class products, and with a strong track record of success in sub Saharan Africa. We’re currently building on the consortium partners’ traction in East Africa with our forthcoming SMART Communities in Kenya.
